Whaley Volunteer Appreciation Picnic Honored Community Members and Groups

Close to 200 volunteers, community members, staff and children gathered at Whaley Children’s Center on Wednesday, July 17 to for a celebration of the time and talents donated to the Center each year by its many supporters.

At the event, many community members were recognized for their above and beyond commitments. The awards winners included: Scott Triplett of FirstMerit Bank (Volunteer of the Year(, CH Robinson (Volunteer Organization of the Year), Melissa and Martin Gunther (Mentors of the Year), Renee Niles of Niles Custom Solutions (Special Event Volunteer of the Year), Diana Slates and Angela Smith (Family Volunteers of the Year), TeLeah Brown (Teacher of the Year) and Kiwanis, Optimist, Rotary and Zonta Clubs (Outstanding Civic Groups of the Year).

“Despite the unexpected heat advisory, the picnic was an absolute success,” said Whaley Director of Development Katrina Khouri. “We were so glad so many community members were able to come out to our Center to celebrate the priceless work our volunteers provide us with each year.”

This year’s event was sponsored by HealthPlus of Michigan. Many HealthPlus employees volunteered their time to ensure the event was a relaxing and enjoyable time for all attendees.

Donations from Airhead Balloons, Bubba O’Malley’s, Two Women and a Tray, Funtastic Inflatables, Pepsi Beverages Company, Walgreens, Dart and 5 Star Entertainment added to the overall environment at the event.

Whaley Children’s Center is an independent, 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1926 that provides residential child care services to children age 5- 17 years old who have suffered chronic and profound abuse and neglect.
