Whaley Children’s Center will hold their annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic presented by HealthPlus of Michigan on Wednesday, August 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Whaley Children’s Center located at 1201 N. Grand Traverse, Flint MI 48503. Congressman Dan Kildee will be present to speak about the impact that volunteers have on helping children overcome their pasts, as well as the positive effects volunteers have on the entire community. The Congressman is a former employee of the Center and a national advocate of child welfare.
This event is a chance for Whaley’s Board of Directors, staff and children to show appreciation to the hundreds of volunteers who donate their time and talents to the Center each year. Eight awards will be presented, including: Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Organization of the Year, Mentor of the Year, Special Event Volunteer of the Year, Family Volunteer of the Year, Greek Group of the Year, Production Cast of the Year and Outstanding Civic Groups of the Year.
“We’re grateful to all our volunteers who support our mission by volunteering. Through their hard work and dedication we’re able to transform lives of children who are survivors of abuse and neglect,” said Katrina Khouri, director of development at Whaley Children’s Center. “It has been a successful year for Whaley in serving more children and advocating for the prevention of child abuse. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without our volunteers,” she continued.
This is the second consecutive year that HealthPlus of Michigan has sponsored this event. Louis Hawkins, community relations administrator of HealthPlus of Michigan stated, “It’s an awesome feeling to see volunteers come together as a family and celebrate their work with children, which gives those children a reason to look forward to the future. The heartfelt support that each volunteer gives to Whaley has a lasting, positive impact.”
Donations from Tropical Smoothie Café, Bubba O’Malley’s, Sam’s Club, Vogt’s Flowers, Cool Bus Party Rental, Two Women and a Tray, Funtastic Inflatables, Pepsi Beverages Company, Gary Nickel, Bentley’s Florist, Captain’s Club at Woodfield, Amazing Tents and Chairs, Gerych’s, and Genesys Conference and Banquet Center will make this event an enjoyable occasion for all staff, children and guests.
